About the position

The Communications Manager, Community Building will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission by executing on the hemispheric story of Audubon's work in and across states, regions, countries, centers, and chapters. This role supports strategic communication efforts to grow and more deeply engage Audubon's audience aligned to the strategic plan. This role reports to Communications Director, Community Building. This is a hybrid role, with a strong preference to be based in our New York City office. However, we will also consider candidates in Washington, DC or remote within the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Identify storytelling opportunities that demonstrate Audubon's approach, work, and impact towards conservation and organizational goals in Flight Plan.
  • Draft or edit stories, including blog posts, videos, social content, infographics, and one-pagers.
  • Contribute to regular pitch meetings with colleagues and be a key driver of content ideation.
  • Develop deep understanding of Audubon's audiences and how to communicate and engage with them effectively.
  • Maintain a suite of organizational pages on the website, collaborating with stakeholders in Strategic Communications, Marketing, People & Culture, Conservation, Finance, and others to ensure that the website is up-to-date and meeting organizational and marketing needs.
  • Develop communications plan and website copy to support the Audubon Leadership Conference.
  • Manage media outreach and opportunities for one or two key Audubon programs like Audubon on Campus.
  • Collaborate with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing or a closely related field required; equivalent combination of education and experience also considered.
  • At least 5 years of related experience, experience with nonprofit communications strongly preferred.
  • Outstanding writing and editorial skills, deep understanding of writing persuasively and on deadline for a wide variety of audiences.
  • Track record of successfully identifying stories about organizational impact.
  • Track record of successfully pitching stories to media outlets.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills and the ability to maintain a team-focused attitude in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Familiarity with environmental, conservation, and climate issues strongly preferred.
  • Commitment to Audubon's organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Experience conducting or managing Spanish-language communications is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other key Microsoft Office and web-based products.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems like Drupal or WordPress, project management platforms, digital communications tools, and social media platforms required.
  • A flexible approach to work, with a willingness to travel, as needed, and participate in programs occurring after typical business hours.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 10% of the time.

Benefits

  • Salary range based on geo-differentials: $70,000-$85,000/year = National; $80,000-$95,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY; $90,000-$105,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle.
