About the position

The Communications Manager at Zoo Milwaukee County is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies that promote the Zoo's mission as a conservation organization while also driving attendance and revenue through effective messaging and public relations. This role serves as the primary media contact and spokesperson for the Zoo, overseeing all aspects of public communications including media relations, social media, and written content.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute a communications strategy to promote events and programs.
  • Serve as the primary media contact and Zoo spokesperson for inquiries from media outlets.
  • Develop, write, and edit various written communications including news releases and promotional materials.
  • Manage the Zoo's website, ensuring content aligns with marketing strategies and analytics.
  • Oversee the social media program and digital marketing efforts, including email newsletters.
  • Supervise the Communications section, providing leadership and support to team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a closely related field.
  • Five years of experience in Media Relations, Professional Writing, Public Relations, Communications, or Journalism.
  • One year of supervisory or management experience.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with content management systems, Google Analytics, and social media platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience using Smartsheet.
