About the position

The Communications Manager at the University of Texas at Dallas will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering internal and external communications for the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM). Reporting directly to the Dean, this position is responsible for a wide range of communication tasks that require a high degree of creativity and strategic thinking. The individual will be tasked with developing and writing marketing communications materials that resonate with various audiences, ensuring that the tone and messaging are appropriate across multiple platforms. This includes creating brochures, advertising content, email campaigns, and digital communications, while collaborating closely with NSM's departments, centers, and programs. In this role, the Communications Manager will write, edit, and proofread content for all promotional materials produced by NSM, including the website, email communications, and social media posts. The individual will also be responsible for producing print publications and articles, adhering to the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook or other specified usage guides. The position requires the development and implementation of marketing communications from concept to completion, with a focus on student recruitment and engaging external audiences such as alumni, donors, and corporate partners. Additionally, the Communications Manager will draft speeches and press releases for the Dean and support the creation of internal communications materials for faculty and students. The role also involves assisting with crisis communication and media inquiries, tracking media coverage, and managing the communications team, which may include student employees and freelance support personnel. The Communications Manager will be expected to perform related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall mission of NSM and the University of Texas at Dallas.

Responsibilities

  • Write, edit, and proofread content for all internal, external, promotional, and other materials produced by NSM, including the website, email, and social media.
  • Write, edit, and proofread NSM print publications and articles according to the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook or other usage guides provided.
  • Develop and implement marketing communications from concept to completion, including message development, writing, project management, and client interaction.
  • Focus on student recruitment and engaging broader external audiences, including alumni, donors, corporations, and foundations.
  • Tell the stories of donors through printed and digital mediums.
  • Draft items for the Dean, such as speeches and press releases, and support the development of internal communications materials.
  • Assist with crisis communication and media queries in collaboration with the Office of Communication.
  • Track media coverage via print and online media.
  • Assist with communications team management, including student employees and freelance support personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communication, English, or marketing.
  • Five to seven years of experience within the field of communications/journalism.
  • Experience in branding, communications, marketing, advertising, management, or donor stewardship is preferred, with 8-10 years being ideal.
  • Some project management experience is a plus.
  • Copy-writing experience with a strong command of grammar and ability to write in a style suited to target audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in a higher education environment or with clients in the 15-25 year-old demographic.
  • Familiarity with writing for higher education clients.
