About the position

The Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is seeking an individual to work in public service as a Communications Specialist 13 in the Office of Communications. This position is an opportunity to build a career doing work that truly matters - helping to protect consumers and maintain public confidence in Michigan's insurance and financial services industries. The right candidate will serve an essential role in the Office of Communications. You will be responsible for overseeing DIFS' communications activities, which include assisting the Communications Director with developing communications strategy and media relations, writing and developing talking points, and serving as DIFS' Emergency Management Coordinator. Ideal candidates will have the drive to serve the people of the State of Michigan and make a difference in an important role that supports Michigan individuals and businesses. You will need the ability to communicate clearly orally, in writing, and in public speaking situations; develop effective presentations; and possess an analytical mind capable of understanding complex statutes, policy forms, and converting this information into an easy to understand, consumer-friendly format. The ability to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative, and high-tech environment while demonstrating sound professional judgement and decision-making is essential. You will also need the desire to work closely with colleagues and management to solve problems, and the ability to work well both independently and within a team. Work Location: This is an in-person position based in Lansing, Michigan, with the possibility for a hybrid work schedule where you would work from home up to three days per week, following a training period if approved. Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, broadcasting, telecommunications, advertising, or communication arts.
  • Four years of professional experience in the communications field equivalent to a Communications Representative, including two years equivalent to a Communications Representative P11 or one year equivalent to a Communications Representative 12.
  • Strong writing skills and public speaking abilities.
  • Analytical skills to understand complex statutes and policy forms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public health communications.
  • Familiarity with media relations and crisis communication strategies.
