About the position

The Communications Specialist I at the University of Alabama is responsible for writing and editing communications for various departments, colleges, and divisions under general supervision. This role involves developing and implementing plans, activities, and tactics that align with the goals of assigned areas. The specialist will coordinate the production of materials and resources across multiple platforms, including both digital and physical mediums. In addition to these core responsibilities, the Communications Specialist I will develop, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive communication plan that encompasses social media, public relations, graphic design, website management, and circulation. The position requires the development and implementation of strategies aimed at engaging students and other stakeholders, tailored to meet departmental needs and goals. This role offers opportunities for creativity and innovation in promoting the programs, services, and facilities of University Recreation. The specialist will manage communications for University Recreation events and services, ensuring compliance with Strategic Communications and Student Life Divisional Communications. This includes overseeing the design and distribution of information to keep members and staff informed about available services and program offerings. The Communications Specialist I will also coordinate with Student Life Communications to create promotional materials for University Recreation and develop strategic promotion plans for various departmental areas. Furthermore, the role involves designing and presenting UREC-specific presentations for events such as Bama Bound Orientation, University Days, and Transfer Days, as well as for campus partners. The specialist will provide program management and oversight of student staff with specialized skills and assist the Director of Communications for the Division of Student Life in supporting divisional communication efforts. The position requires a commitment to promoting a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace, alongside completing required training.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit communications for departments, colleges, and divisions under general supervision.
  • Develop and implement plans, activities, and tactics to support departmental goals.
  • Coordinate the production of materials and resources through various platforms.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive communication plan including social media and public relations.
  • Create strategies to engage students and stakeholders based on departmental needs.
  • Manage communication for University Recreation events and services in compliance with divisional communications.
  • Oversee design and distribution of information regarding services and program offerings.
  • Coordinate with Student Life Communications to create promotional materials for University Recreation.
  • Develop short-term and long-term strategic promotion plans for departmental areas.
  • Design and present UREC-specific presentations for various campus events and partners.
  • Provide program management and oversight of student staff with specialized skills.
  • Assist the Director of Communications for the Division of Student Life in communication efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications.
  • Some experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications.
  • Portfolio demonstrating competence in design and publication preparation for print and electronic production.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience supervising and managing interns and/or student workers.
  • Experience managing social media for departments at a college or university.
  • Experience in photography and videography.
  • Experience in web design, specifically with WordPress.
  • Experience in communications, project management, and writing, proofing, and editing.
  • Knowledge of AP style and content management of social media accounts.
