About the position
The Communications Specialist is responsible for executing strategic communications goals, including media relations, marketing, and multimedia communications. This role supports the Communications Director in implementing a comprehensive communication plan to promote City Council's goals and initiatives while managing outreach efforts across City Council's elected members, as directed by the Director of Communications and in collaboration with the Communications Team. The Communications Team operates as a collaborative group that provides expertise and support in the areas of marketing, media relations, digital and social media.
Responsibilities
- Implement communications priorities, goals, and objectives to ensure City Council messaging is accurate, effective, and timely as outlined by the Communications Director.
- Collaborate as a 'news team' with other members of the Communications Team.
- Disseminate information to cultivate public relations and community engagement.
- Write materials, including press releases, articles, event calendars and media highlights.
- Manage media requests and issue press releases and advisories.
- Monitor, gather and share daily media coverage and news clips.
- Attend media interviews, City Council meetings, monthly office meetings, hearings and aides meetings.
- Support public education campaigns and community outreach initiatives as assigned.
- Maintain and update media lists and the Constant Contact web program.
- Collaborate with the Social Media Specialist to align digital and design efforts.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing strategic communication plans.
- Demonstrated ability to work with media to communicate organizational messages effectively.
- Proficiency in social media content marketing and graphic design for visual content creation.
- Strong knowledge of community engagement and outreach strategies.
