About the position

The Communications Specialist Manager is responsible for overseeing the KUMC Police Dispatch Center, ensuring effective management of staff, equipment, and communication systems. This role involves coordinating with various stakeholders, writing policies, and providing necessary training. The manager must act decisively in emergencies and maintain compliance with regulatory agencies while ensuring officer safety and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct all aspects of the KUMC Police Dispatch Center.
  • Provide leadership and supervision within the dispatch division.
  • Ensure officer safety is prioritized in dispatch operations.
  • Serve as the direct manager for Communication Specialist Supervisors and other personnel.
  • Maintain communication with appropriate Police Command.
  • Make recommendations regarding hiring, termination, and promotions.
  • Assist with budget management for dispatch operations.
  • Liaise with the Patrol Captain for radio system management.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC, State, and Federal laws.
  • Represent the department in emergency communications at various levels.
  • Work with internal personnel and external vendors for system maintenance.
  • Write and submit clear reports as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, criminal justice, public administration, or related field.
  • Minimum four years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum two years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Knowledgeable in public safety communications and radio systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other software packages.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to remain calm in crisis situations.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with high integrity.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field.
  • Experience with P25 radio systems and Tait radios.
  • Professional accreditations such as APCO, NENA, or ENP.
  • Experience as a communications unit leader in incident management.
