Communications Specialist-Public Relations

About the position

The position involves identifying stories and assisting with written materials for various media outlets including electronic, print, web, video, and others. The stories will cover a range of topics such as research news, feature stories about institutional initiatives and programs, and faculty profiles. The role requires developing and maintaining relationships with faculty, staff, and members of the local and national media to provide media relations services that advance public awareness of Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission and achievements. Additionally, the position includes planning, developing collateral material for, and implementing media relations events such as press conferences, symposia, and town halls. The role also supports the media analytics program to track and measure media placements and their impact.

Responsibilities

• Identify stories and assist with written materials for various media outlets.
• Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, staff, and media members.
• Provide media relations services to enhance public awareness of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
• Plan and implement media relations events such as press conferences and town halls.
• Support the media analytics program to track and measure media placements.

Requirements

• College degree in life sciences, science writing, journalism, or communications required.
• Minimum of three years of experience in journalism, media relations, or public affairs, preferably for a university.
• Demonstrated experience in implementing effective external and internal communications plans and strategies.
• Strong communication skills and ability to communicate information clearly and objectively.
• Experience working with news media and knowledge of academic medical center culture.
• Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects.

Nice-to-haves
