About the position

The Communications Specialist role at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital is a vital position within the Transfer Center and Transport Team. This position is responsible for managing patient referral calls from outside hospitals, facilitating consults or admissions, and ensuring that all processes are completed efficiently. The Dispatch Specialist plays a crucial role in coordinating in-patient and referral calls, particularly for trauma, ECMO, and CVOR activations, which require immediate staff and facility preparation. The role involves real-time tracking and monitoring of LifeLine teams, ensuring that all transport services are dispatched and tracked accurately through various software systems. The Dispatch Specialist will utilize Zoll software for ground transport services and will be responsible for documenting all referral calls in the Teletracking program. This documentation is essential for providing information regarding care coordination. Additionally, the role includes assisting with both national and international fixed-wing flights, ensuring that all safety regulations and protocols are adhered to during transport. The position also requires participation in public relations events, which may include tours and presentations about the program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in emergency medical services or law enforcement dispatch, with the ability to think critically and make informed decisions regarding referrals and transport options. Continuous professional growth and education are expected, along with compliance with all hospital safety regulations and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates in-patient and referral calls from outside facilities for potential hospital admission or consult
  • Manages trauma, ECMO and CVOR activations resulting in staff and facility preparation
  • Dispatches and tracks LifeLine ground transport services through Zoll software; following and charting throughout transport
  • Ability to operate UHF, VHF, Aviation and Push to Talk radio systems
  • Dispatches and tracks air transport services through tracking software and effective use of radio communications, following and charting throughout transport
  • Documents referral calls in Teletracking program in order to provide information regarding care coordination
  • Assists in facilitating both national and international fixed wing flights
  • Ensures that the Post Accident Incident Plan (PAIP) is initiated and adhered to for both ground and air transports when applicable
  • Maintains professional growth and education including all required competencies and mandated in-services
  • Provides fire suppression support for flights as needed
  • Participates in public relations events, including but not limited to 10th floor tours, helipad tours and speaking about the program
  • Supports the daily operations of the transfer center and transport team through assistance with preparation, communication and follow up
  • Adheres to all hospital and departmental safety regulations, disaster plans, infection control policies, fire safety regulations, and biohazard material disposal policies

Requirements

  • A minimum of a High School diploma, GED, Certificate of Completion or equivalent achievement
  • Current Licensure as EMT, Paramedic, RN, or RT with three years' experience in a clinical setting OR a minimum of two years EMS or law enforcement dispatch experience
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking in determining best options for referrals and transport
