About the position

The University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) is seeking a Communications Specialist to enhance its communication efforts across various platforms. This role is pivotal in collaborating with JSIS Programs and Centers to provide design and content creation, website development and maintenance, and social media management for JSIS programs and events. The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Director of Communications and will be responsible for developing comprehensive publicity plans for events, drafting email campaigns, and creating appealing content to engage the community and promote JSIS initiatives. In this position, the Communications Specialist will engage in a variety of tasks that include overseeing email newsletters, ensuring compliance with brand guidelines, and providing editorial support for content generated by students and faculty. The role also involves creating engaging social media posts and monitoring user engagement across platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently while adhering to deadlines. The JSIS is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment, and the Communications Specialist will play a key role in communicating the school's mission and values to a broader audience. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a small team to develop comprehensive publicity plans for each Center event.
  • Draft and oversee email campaigns to promote events and opportunities.
  • Assist in creating appeal letters to donors and other fundraising communications.
  • Generate email newsletters, including text writing, image formatting, and adherence to guidelines using respective email platforms and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with official brand guidelines and supply approved logos and assets to partners.
  • Provide constructive feedback on graphic designers' work.
  • Execute the production of flyers, brochures, and other assets, either through commission or independent design.
  • Edit content from students, faculty, and contributors, offering feedback and coordinating revisions.
  • Create article summaries and publish to online channels, including formatting text, images, and hyperlinks.
  • Source appropriate online images, edit images as necessary, and add metadata.
  • Ongoing review of website content.
  • Develop engaging weekly posts for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, sharing event information, news, photos, and articles.
  • Monitor and respond to user engagement.
  • Create custom graphics and cropped images as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business, International Studies or other related fields.
  • 1 year experience in communications, web applications, and design.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, problem-solve, take initiative, set priorities, and manage multiple projects efficiently.
  • Proficiency in WordPress or ability to quickly learn the platform.
  • Experience in managing social media platforms for business.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with brand management activities.
  • Experience in a university setting and familiarity with International Studies.
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS, with experience in customizing WordPress sites.
  • Familiarity with desktop publishing and proficiency in graphic design software, ideally Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Experience using email marketing platforms.
