About the position

This position is in the Office of Air and Radiation, specifically within the Office of Radiation and Indoor Air, Radiation Protection Division, Center for Radiation Information and Outreach. As a Communications Specialist, you will serve as a national and/or international communications expert and a primary advisor to the Radiation Protection Division Management and higher levels of EPA management on editorial policy, technical reporting, and communication strategies. Your role will involve providing assistance in the collection of information resources for RPD staff use, public inquiries, congressional and intergovernmental inquiries, and Freedom-of-Information Act (FOIA) inquiries. You will also support the Public Information Officer before and during radiation emergency exercises and events. It is important to note that you will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements. This position may involve filling one or more roles in the organization advertised and/or in other organizations, as appropriate to the position.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a national and/or international communications expert for the Radiation Protection Division.
  • Advise Radiation Protection Division Management and higher levels of EPA management on editorial policy and communication strategies.
  • Assist in the collection of information resources for RPD staff use and public inquiries.
  • Support the Public Information Officer during radiation emergency exercises and events.
  • Handle congressional and intergovernmental inquiries, as well as Freedom-of-Information Act (FOIA) inquiries.

Requirements

  • At least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in developing and implementing communication and outreach strategies.
  • Experience collaborating with or creating partnerships with internal and external partners regarding Radiation Information and Outreach.
  • Ability to provide recommendations to management on program efficiency.
  • Knowledge of environmental radiation hazards and communication/public affairs strategies.
  • Skill in written communication sufficient to provide recommendations.
  • Knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
  • Ability to maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Skill in oral communication sufficient to provide guidance.
  • Ability to develop public affairs program materials.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations.
