About the position

The Communications Staff Aide position within the Fairfax County Government's Board of Supervisors office is a full-time role that focuses on communications, community outreach, and casework. The successful candidate will work closely with the Dranesville District Supervisor, James N. Bierman, Jr., and will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing community engagement and communication efforts. This role requires a proactive individual who can manage multiple responsibilities and work independently while also being part of a team. Key responsibilities include producing a weekly events newsletter in collaboration with district office staff, managing and growing the district's social media channels, and maintaining the Dranesville District website. The aide will also play a crucial role in organizing and managing various community engagement events throughout the district, providing constituent services on various issues, and serving as a liaison to county departments and state/federal agencies. Additionally, the aide will assist in drafting press releases, talking points, and other board matters, and will be expected to attend stakeholder meetings, which may be a mix of virtual and in-person. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and will be able to demonstrate discretion and independent work capabilities. The position may require working outside of normal business hours, and the appointee will need to complete a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Produce weekly events newsletter in coordination with District office staff.
  • Manage and grow social media channels.
  • Maintain Dranesville District website.
  • Work as part of a team to initiate and manage various community engagement events throughout the district.
  • Provide constituent services on various issues as needed and serve as the liaison to county departments and state/federal agencies.
  • Assist with drafting of press releases, talking points, and board matters.
  • Attend stakeholder meetings as needed (mix of virtual and in-person meetings).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in communications, public relations, political science, constituent services, event production, or similar line of work.
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours, as required.
  • Experience in political settings (preferred).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent workplace software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with newsletter software such as Constant Contact, GovDelivery, Mailchimp.
  • Graphics software experience such as Adobe Photoshop and Canva.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational and research skills.
