About the position

The Communications Support Specialist position is designed to assist in creating effective communication products that convey the program missions of the ASPR (Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response) to external audiences. This role is crucial in equipping ASPR and its stakeholders with the necessary tools to effectively communicate the impact of their programs. The specialist will provide strategic guidance and support for stakeholder engagement, which includes the development of educational and training materials. Additionally, the role involves creating materials and strategies that highlight ASPR's contributions to public health and emergency preparedness, ensuring that the messaging is clear and impactful. In this position, the Communications Support Specialist will support the Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) in engaging with various stakeholders, both public and private, to enhance emergency and trauma care readiness. This includes developing advanced communications toolkits that address critical areas such as privacy and data sharing. The specialist will also engage with stakeholders to develop and execute strategies that ensure healthcare systems are prepared to respond effectively in emergencies. The role may involve performing other job-related duties as assigned, emphasizing the need for flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in strategic communications, particularly in the context of emergency preparedness. They will be expected to leverage their experience to create impactful communication strategies that resonate with diverse audiences, including historically marginalized groups. This position requires a proactive approach to stakeholder engagement and a commitment to fostering inclusive environments through effective communication.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with creating products to convey programs' missions to an external audience and to equip ASPR and its stakeholders with the necessary tools for messaging program impact.
  • Provide strategic guidance and support for engagement with internal and external stakeholder communities, including educational and training materials.
  • Develop materials and strategy to highlight ASPR's acumen and contributions to public health and medical emergency preparedness and response.
  • Support HPP's engagement with various public and private sector stakeholders and partners.
  • Develop advanced communications toolkits (e.g., privacy and data sharing) and guidance.
  • Engage with public and private sector stakeholders to develop and assist in execution of strategies to enhance emergency and trauma care to help ensure health care systems are ready to respond.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, or a related discipline.
  • 5-7 years of experience in Strategic Communications for emergency preparedness.
  • Experience with communications related to emergency management preparedness.
  • Experience developing communications toolkits.
  • Experience with 508 compliance, particularly as it relates to web-based online training.
  • Experience with Health and Human Services (HSS), particularly within ASPR.
  • Experience developing branding strategies for emergency management preparedness.
  • Experience working with historically marginalized groups, including rural communities and Tribal Nations.
  • Experience with data collection and data analysis to determine the effectiveness of a given initiative.
  • Proficient in understanding and respecting diverse cultural backgrounds, fostering inclusive environments, and effectively communicating across cultures.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision making capabilities.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
