About the position

The Communications Systems Engineer is responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining a variety of telecommunications systems, including wired and wireless voice and data systems for all City of Bryan departments. This position involves performing related duties as assigned, ensuring the reliability and health of communication systems, and acting as a subject matter expert for end users. The role requires proactive diagnostics, compliance with regulations, and participation in meetings with local, state, and federal agencies. The engineer will also be involved in after-hours support and may travel for conferences and training.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains wired and wireless voice and data communications systems and equipment, including fiber optic and copper cabling, and two-way radios.
  • Researches, analyzes, and implements software patches or hardware changes.
  • Performs analytical work on various radio systems and communications technologies.
  • Installs Distribution Automation SCADA antenna networks on utility poles.
  • Receives and responds to reports of trouble related to communications systems and equipment.
  • Uses electronic testing equipment to diagnose problems and repairs equipment as needed.
  • Provides proactive diagnostic and analytic measures to ensure system reliability.
  • Monitors and reviews projects to ensure deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Acts as subject matter expert to end users on communications systems and equipment.
  • Ensures readiness and adequacy of backup communications equipment and systems.
  • Documents changes made to systems and equipment through appropriate communications and record-keeping.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding communications systems.
  • Participates in meetings and committees with local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Acts as a vendor liaison during installation and removal of communication equipment.
  • Remains current on industry standards and principles through regular study and training.
  • Responds to calls for service outside of normal business hours as needed.
  • Occasionally travels to conferences and training events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Electronics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with experience in installation and maintenance of communications systems; OR an Associate's degree with at least two years of related experience; OR a High School Diploma/GED with significant coursework and at least four years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of wired and/or wireless communications systems.
  • Ability to learn and improve knowledge of communications interoperability plans and technologies.
  • Ability to organize workload, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) Certification and/or General Communications Technician (GCT) Certification preferred.
