About the position
The Communications Technician II position at the University of Northern Iowa involves the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of communication cables, including twisted pair copper and optical fiber. The role requires troubleshooting voice and data service issues, updating cable plant and data communications software, and collaborating with network engineers to modify electronic configurations. This position is essential for ensuring the operational performance of electronic switching hardware and supporting the overall network infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, test, and repair inter-building and intra-building communication cables.
- Troubleshoot voice and data service problems related to cable plant or telephone set using various test equipment.
- Update cable plant and data communications software/database as changes are made.
- Work with network engineers to modify electronics configuration to activate voice or data connection.
- Install, maintain, modify, repair, and monitor the operational performance of electronic switching hardware.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from a two-year resident electronic school.
- Three years of experience in electronic communications transmission and termination, which may include vendor training/certification.
- Any combination of training and experience from which comparable knowledge and experience can be gained.
Nice-to-haves
- BICSI ICT Cabling Installation Certification.
