About the position

The East Central Ohio Educational Service Center is seeking a dedicated Community-Based Prevention Specialist to join its Student Wellness Program, focusing on Belmont, Harrison, and Monroe Counties. This role is pivotal in delivering direct services related to substance abuse prevention, problem gambling prevention, and mental health promotion within the community. The Prevention Specialist will engage with community partners to foster motivation for community change and will actively participate in local coalitions aimed at enhancing public health outcomes. The position emphasizes the use of evidence-based prevention strategies to ensure effective program delivery and community impact. In this role, the Prevention Specialist will coordinate, develop, and implement various programs targeting substance abuse and problem gambling prevention, as well as mental health promotion for adult populations across the three counties. This includes participating in community-based processes, serving as a liaison for the agency, and engaging in various community and state committees, task forces, and coalitions. The specialist will also provide community-based prevention education programs tailored to specific targeted populations, ensuring that the programs are relevant and impactful. Additionally, the Prevention Specialist will be responsible for coordinating prevention coalitions in Belmont, Harrison, and Monroe Counties, ensuring that all activities align with the agency's mission and vision. Continuous professional development is essential, and the specialist will be required to attend workshops and training sessions to enhance their skills and maintain state prevention certification. A comprehensive understanding of state, federal, and local laws related to the agency's programs, as well as knowledge of human behavior dynamics, psychosocial issues, and cultural competency, is crucial for success in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, develop and implement substance abuse and problem gambling prevention and mental health promotion programs for adult populations in the 3 county area using evidence-based strategies
  • Participate in community-based process activities (agency liaison person, serve on various community and state committees, task forces, coalitions, etc.)
  • Provide community based prevention education programs with targeted populations
  • Coordinate prevention coalitions in Belmont, Harrison and Monroe Counties
  • Attend required workshops and trainings to improve professional skills and to obtain or maintain state prevention certification

Requirements

  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • Minimum of Associate degree (Bachelor's preferred) in public health, social work, community health, sociology, psychology or other related human services field
  • Must currently be certified as a Prevention Specialist or begin the process of prevention certification following the guidelines determined by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board upon hire
  • Must be drug-free (including nicotine) and adhere to the Agency's Drug-free Workplace policy
  • Must undergo FBI and BCI background check. Employment is contingent upon a criminal free background check

Benefits

  • Full-time position
  • Salary range of $30,000.00 - $39,000.00 per year depending on education and experience
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, some weekends and evenings to meet programming needs
