About the position

The Community Behavioral Specialist at Rice University is responsible for providing crisis intervention, assessment, case management, community outreach, and education to the university community. This role is a collaborative effort between the Rice University Police Department and various health and wellbeing programs, ensuring a supportive environment for students, staff, and faculty. The position requires a flexible schedule to meet community needs, including potential evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis intervention and assessment for individuals in need.
• Conduct case management and community outreach initiatives.
• Engage in campus education programs related to mental health and wellbeing.
• Assist in mental health crisis de-escalation and provide referrals as necessary.
• Consult with faculty and staff on psychological issues affecting students.
• Perform outreach programming for students and consultations for faculty and staff.
• Provide hospital accompaniment for students in crisis situations.
• Assist with the management of safety planning for student events and protests.
• Act as a liaison for the Rice University Police Department during campus protests.
• Participate in community meetings and represent the university's interests.

Requirements

• Master's degree in counseling or social work.
• Licensed in professional counseling or social work (LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or LMSW) in Texas.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in mental health and community engagement.
• Experience working with law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

Nice-to-haves

• One or more years of experience providing mental health case management or outreach.
• Experience case managing interpersonal violence and suicidality.
• Familiarity with Houston and Harris County resources.
• Clinical skills to assess for suicide and other crises.
• Proficiency in computer applications such as PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Google Drive, and Zoom.
