About the position

The Community Behavioral Specialist at Rice University is responsible for providing crisis intervention, assessment, case management, community outreach, and education to the university community. This role is a collaborative effort between the Rice University Police Department and various health and wellbeing programs, focusing on supporting students, staff, and faculty in mental health crises and promoting a safe campus environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide crisis intervention and assessment for students, staff, and faculty.
• Conduct community outreach and engagement activities.
• Deliver educational programs related to mental health and wellbeing.
• Assist in mental health crisis de-escalation and provide referrals.
• Consult with graduate and professional schools on student matters.
• Assess individuals in crisis for potential hospitalization.
• Provide hospital accompaniment for mental health crises.
• Support the management of safety planning for student events.
• Act as a liaison for the Rice University Police Department during campus protests.
• Participate in debriefing sessions for RUPD officers after critical incidents.

Requirements

• Master's degree in counseling or social work.
• Valid Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or equivalent license in Texas.
• 3+ years of experience in mental health and community engagement.
• Experience working with law enforcement and criminal justice systems.
• Ability to assess needs during a crisis situation.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Multicultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations.

Nice-to-haves

• One or more years of experience providing mental health case management or outreach.
• Experience managing cases involving interpersonal violence and suicidality.
• Familiarity with Houston and Harris County resources.
• Clinical skills to assess for suicide and other crises.
• Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Google Drive, and Zoom.
