About the position

The Community Circulation Manager (Library Assistant III) is responsible for managing the operations of the circulation department within a community library. This role serves as the person-in-charge as needed and is a key member of the branch management team. The manager will respond to the needs of library customers, resolve customer issues, and perform all essential circulation and support duties. The position also involves overseeing the circulation department's staff, ensuring that policies and procedures are communicated and implemented effectively. The manager will identify departmental training needs and develop agendas for monthly staff meetings, ensuring that all team members are informed and engaged in their roles. Additionally, the manager will handle complex circulation problems and client account issues, such as outstanding books and fines, and will serve as a liaison with the Facilities Coordinator and county facility departments. The Community Circulation Manager will also be responsible for preparing daily and biweekly circulation schedules to ensure efficient branch coverage. This includes interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating the performance of subordinates and volunteers. The role requires a thorough knowledge of library duties, policies, and procedures, as well as the ability to lead and supervise a large team. The manager must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while establishing and maintaining good working relationships with others. The position may also involve assisting with outreach and other library programs, contributing to the overall goals and objectives of the Fairfax County Public Library.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the circulation department of a small or mid-size community library.
  • Supervise the page manager of the library.
  • Communicate and implement circulation policies and procedures.
  • Assign circulation support tasks to staff.
  • Identify and implement departmental development and training needs.
  • Resolve complex circulation problems and client account issues.
  • Develop agendas and conduct monthly circulation department staff meetings.
  • Serve as liaison with Facilities Coordinator and county facility departments.
  • Prepare daily and biweekly circulation or page schedules for efficient branch coverage.
  • Interview, select, train, and evaluate the performance of subordinates and volunteers.
  • Perform all general public service circulation duties and support tasks.
  • Serve as a member of the Branch Management Team.
  • May serve as branch Person-In-Charge.
  • Assist with outreach and other library programs.

Requirements

  • Completion of an associate degree or two years (60 semester hours) of course work at an accredited college or university.
  • Three years of full-time library experience or equivalent part-time experience, including two years performing duties comparable to Library Assistant I or one year comparable to Library Assistant II.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.
  • Strong word processing and writing skills.
  • Basic math skills and ability to perform basic arithmetic.
  • Experience with databases and supervising staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Four or more years of experience working in a library setting.
  • Three or more years of supervisory experience, including training, coaching, and evaluating staff.
