About the position

The clinician will be part of an alternative co-responder team partnering with Columbus Division of Police officers to address behavioral health crises in the community. The chosen clinician will provide brief crisis clinical services that help de-escalate crisis situations and promote stability. The clinician will provide comprehensive, community-based services by providing immediate crisis intervention response in multiple settings, including homes, schools, and community organizations, to individuals who are experiencing a mental health/substance use crisis. The MCR (Mobile Crisis Response) team is dispatched daily from the 911 call center between the hours of 10 am and 12 am; staff work 10-hour shifts with three consecutive days off. Current open shifts for hire are 2 pm-12 am with Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday off.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct community-based crisis response and outreach, psychosocial assessment, counseling, and social services support and linkage with residents experiencing behavioral health and/or addiction crisis.
  • Responds as part of a public safety team to provide therapeutic and behavioral health-oriented services.
  • Provides crisis intervention, counseling, social services support, and de-escalation techniques via direct outreach and response and/or telecommunications as within a call center environment.
  • Provides assessments in-person and via phone to determine lethality concerns.
  • Promotes and disseminates information and services throughout the community, including alcohol/other drug misuse or dependency, behavioral health matters, and social needs.
  • Determines level of care and stabilization needs; provides clinical assessment of needs and utilizes current therapeutic principles and techniques.
  • Conducts linkage to community-based social services such as housing, food, and transportation; educates program participants and their families about available resources.
  • Provides brief case management and necessary follow-up with community members during crisis situations; provides transition and/or release of cases to longer-term resources.
  • Responds to requests for assistance from the public, law enforcement personnel, and community social service organizations as requested.
  • Operates a computer and telecommunications equipment to enter information for case management, generate reports, and keep electronic records.
  • May be requested to appear at scenes of crimes or other intense or escalated environments.
  • May be assigned to serve as a member of an Incident Command System (ICS) Team, or a similar public health response team, which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations.

Requirements

  • Possession of valid State of Ohio licensure by the Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker (LSW), or Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW).
  • One (1) year of experience providing counseling services. A master's degree may be substituted for the one (1) year of experience.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience with assessment, crisis intervention, and de-escalation.
  • Strong familiarity with community-based crisis work related to mental illness and substance use.
  • Ability to quickly build rapport and engage others.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with diverse peers and community residents.
  • Able to operate autonomously within the community but also utilize members of the team and supervisor appropriately due to co-responder model.
  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field, or a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, with a strong knowledge and background in behavioral health, crisis intervention, and lethality assessments.
  • Two years of experience in the human services field.

  • Starting Pay Range: $35.52 to $39.48 per hour
