About the position

The City of Riverton, WY currently has an opening for a Community Development Director. Under administrative direction of the City Administrator, the Community Development Director oversees, manages, administers and directs all functions associated with the day-to-day and overall operation of the Community Development Department. Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates and provides overall direction for the activities of the Community Development Department.
  • Serves as a member of the Senior Management Team tasked with implementing the goals and policies established by the governing body at the direction of the City Administrator.
  • Develops and maintains the fiscal budget for the Department.
  • Resolves complex and sensitive customer service issues either personally, by telephone, or in writing from a solution-based perspective.
  • Attends all meetings of the City Council, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, and Board of Appeals.
  • Performs the duties of building inspector, as required.
  • Provides leadership for community development staff including mentoring, training, communication and performance evaluations.
  • Enforces and interprets a variety of codes and ordinances related to land-use, construction and zoning.
  • Confers with contractors, architects and the public and advises them with regard to possible violations.
  • Develops and maintains subdivision regulations, land use plan, development codes and other applicable local laws.
  • Reviews, evaluates and supervises proposed development plans and specifications.
  • Conducts inspections of building projects for compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and construction codes.
  • Represents Community Development Department at a variety of meetings and makes recommendations for action.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports or presentations on community development projects.
  • Directs and assists in the preparation, maintenance and revision of comprehensive land-use plans for the City.
  • Coordinates city map updates for all changes and improvements.
  • Provides for development and tracking of appropriate metrics associated with the activities of the Community Development Department.
  • Administers the permitting function, including application, fee assessment, permit issuance, inspection, and occupancy.

Requirements

  • Completion of college course work at the Bachelor's level in urban planning or closely related field.
  • Three to five years progressively responsible work experience as a planning director or similar work related experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of zoning, planning and land use.
  • Skill in the operation of GIS/CAD and computer systems including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read and understand complicated plans, blueprints, codes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of International Building codes, electrical codes, and fire codes.

Nice-to-haves

  • AICP certification or ability to obtain within two years of hire.
  • Valid Wyoming Driver's License and be insurable under the City's municipal automobile insurance policy.
