The position of Reporter/Journalist at The Queens Ledger / Brooklyn Star News Group involves covering community news primarily in downtown and northern Brooklyn. The role is designed for an organized and motivated journalist who aspires to grow within the company, potentially advancing to news editor and managing editor positions. The reporter will engage with the community by covering civic meetings, profiling local leaders, and producing content for both print and digital platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Cover community news in downtown and northern Brooklyn.
  • Attend and report on civic and community meetings, including night and weekend events.
  • Curate newsletters and write news articles.
  • Aggregate news for daily newsletters.
  • Profile local leaders and influential community members.
  • Manage stories covered by freelancers.
  • Engage with readers through various platforms, including social media.

Requirements

  • Strong news judgment and editing skills.
  • Ability to quickly understand community, civic, and local political leaders.
  • Knowledge of local government and city/state agencies.
  • Outgoing and confident personality.
  • Proficiency in writing, curating, design, photography, and social media.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of Brooklyn and Queens neighborhoods.
  • Familiarity with InDesign for page layout.
  • Experience with WordPress for content management.
  • Understanding of social media and news site context.
  • Time management skills.
