About the position

The Community Engagement Manager (CEM) at UC San Diego's Sanford Stem Cell Institute is responsible for overseeing community outreach efforts aimed at enhancing equitable access to clinical research opportunities in regenerative medicine, particularly for underserved populations. This role involves developing relationships with community representatives, planning programs, assessing community needs, and coordinating outreach activities to promote health education and trial recruitment. The CEM will also work closely with various stakeholders to ensure that community voices are included in research design and resource allocation decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain overall responsibility for the community outreach section of the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center (SSCC) Alpha Clinic.
  • Lead programmatic efforts to create community connections in underserved populations for equitable access to clinical research opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community representatives and assess community needs and desires.
  • Identify outreach opportunities and organize mobile campaigns aimed at community health education.
  • Coordinate efforts between the SSCCC Alpha Clinic, DEI advisors, community advisors, patient advocacy groups, and medical network partners.
  • Develop trial recruitment campaigns and strategies, providing data reports on diversity in clinical trials.
  • Ensure all research staff receive adequate training in cultural sensitivity and develop training resources and curricula.
  • Participate with CIRM and other partners to develop DEI strategies in regenerative medicine that could influence state and national policies.

Requirements

  • Nine years of related experience, education/training, or a Bachelor's degree in a related area plus five years of related experience/training.
  • Commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work with local and state elected officials and key policymakers.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse community organizations, including non-profit organizations and schools.
  • Ability to perform basic data analyses and create data summaries.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols, and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in English and one other language.
  • Knowledge of clinical research, specifically study volunteer recruitment and regulatory approval processes.
  • Experience as a supervisor.
  • Demonstrated experience with grant writing including project timelines.
