About the position

The Community Support Specialist at Albertina Kerr plays a vital role in empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and other social barriers. This position focuses on providing daily social, educational, and recreational activities tailored to the needs and interests of program participants, fostering their development and integration into the community.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and conduct community-based learning and work experiences consistent with individual ability and choice.
  • Assist staff in designing, planning, scheduling, and implementing community-based individual and group outings, learning activities, and social/recreational activities.
  • Help create social bonds between program participants and non-disabled persons in the community.
  • Facilitate learning through various delivery methods to assist individuals in gaining knowledge and skills for integrated competitive employment.
  • Manage and de-escalate individual behavioral issues, including anger management and conflict resolution.
  • Oversee documentation and communication regarding individuals' attendance, behavior, activities, and progress.
  • Assist individuals with personal care and bathroom support needs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • One year of experience instructing/supervising individuals with developmental disabilities or in a related field.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to relate to clients and customers with diverse abilities and needs.
  • Willingness to drive and transport participants in a 15-passenger van.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to meet all background check, reference, drug screening, and agency driving requirements.
