About the position

The Community Specialist (CS) at Plymouth Housing Group plays a vital role in supporting residents by fostering a sense of community and ensuring high-quality service delivery. This position is rooted in the principles of cultural proficiency, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and the 'housing first' philosophy. The CS works collaboratively within a permanent supportive housing team, which is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of residents. The role involves educating new residents about building functions and expectations, thereby facilitating their acclimatization to their new home. The CS is responsible for creating strong, positive connections among tenants and staff, which is essential for fostering a safe and inclusive environment. In this position, the Community Specialist will engage with tenants, building staff, and external partners to organize culturally relevant activities that cater to a diverse range of interests and needs. This includes planning and executing events, maintaining an activities calendar, and actively encouraging resident participation. The CS will also welcome new residents, support their orientation, and ensure they feel safe and included in the community. The role requires the ability to mediate conflicts, respond to emergencies, and assist residents with their concerns, escalating issues to the Residential Services Manager when necessary. The Community Specialist will also handle administrative tasks, such as coordinating activities, scheduling meetings, and maintaining accurate records of significant events and operations. This position is unionized and requires a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in service delivery. The CS will work a 40-hour week, which may include evenings and weekends, and will be expected to participate in team meetings and committees to uphold the organization's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Identify community building activities in partnership with tenants and building team.
  • Plan and execute an activities calendar, including outreach to residents.
  • Welcome new residents and support their orientation to the building.
  • Identify and secure materials and supplies for events, including welcome baskets for new tenants.
  • Transport groups of tenants to external activities using company vehicles.
  • Mediates conflict and intervenes in crises as necessary.
  • Assist with resident complaints and concerns, escalating as needed.
  • Distribute newsletters and other materials to residents, accommodating language and cultural differences.
  • Plan and execute community events, coordinating with staff and volunteers.
  • Provide support and oversight during community events for volunteers and interns.
  • Maintain a proactive presence during non-event hours to promote safety and community.
  • Participate in staff meetings and committees as appropriate.
  • Respond to emergencies and initiate maintenance actions as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED certification.
  • Two years of experience in the human services field, preferably with low-income or special needs clients.
  • Valid Washington State Driver License with a fully insurable driving record.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to de-escalate potential volatile situations and exercise good judgment during emergencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
