About the position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) in the Community Development Services (CDS) Department is responsible for assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in learning new skills and engaging in community-based activities. This role focuses on building social connections, promoting lifelong learning, and supporting personal development through various daily activities. The position is PRN/floater, requiring flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the individuals supported.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage on an on-call or as needed basis to cover last minute staff call outs and provide coverage for scheduled staff vacations.
  • Assist and supervise daily activities and group-sponsored trips and recreational activities.
  • Assist individuals in participating and exploring the community.
  • Cultivate and expand independent living skills for individuals supported.
  • Assist in the development of meaningful and personal relationships.
  • Implement strategies to achieve individuals' personal goals.
  • Help individuals identify and resolve social or other challenges.
  • Ensure timely and accurate recordkeeping of activities, notes, goals, and other reports.
  • Ensure compliance with COMAR, Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), and Richcroft regulations.
  • Model appropriate behavior and monitor and correct consumer's behavior, including de-escalating anger and frustration and assisting in conflict resolution.
  • Maintain regular communication with residential staff and/or families through written progress reports and meetings.
  • Follow instructions and abide by Agency policies and procedures.
  • Assume other duties, responsibilities, and special projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Ability to assist individuals in community engagement and skill development.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with individuals, families, and staff.
  • Knowledge of compliance regulations related to developmental disabilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a community support or direct support role.
  • Training in behavior management techniques.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
