About the position

The Community Support Specialist will serve as the Regional Volunteer Coordinator for the Lincoln Region, which includes eight counties surrounding Lancaster County. This role is pivotal in providing Medicare education to the public, particularly during the Medicare Open Enrollment period. The specialist will engage with individuals on a one-on-one basis to ensure they understand their Medicare options and benefits. Additionally, the position involves coordinating volunteer activities within the region, which includes recruiting and training new volunteers, providing outreach and education through various public engagements such as speaking engagements, booths, and classes. The specialist will also work to promote the Nebraska SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) and SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) by building partnerships within the community. In this role, the Community Support Specialist will be responsible for providing comprehensive support to ensure that the program meets its goals. This includes answering calls on the program's hotline, assisting walk-in traffic, and performing other necessary duties to support the program's operations. The specialist will also be tasked with offering volunteers the necessary support to address questions about Medicare and related topics, ensuring that they are well-equipped to assist the public effectively. This position requires a strong commitment to regular and reliable attendance, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one Medicare education to the public via in-person, phone, or web-based tools.
  • Coordinate region volunteer activities, including recruitment and training of new volunteers.
  • Offer support to volunteers in addressing questions about Medicare and related topics.
  • Provide outreach and education to the public through speaking engagements, booths, and classes.
  • Promote and build the Nebraska SHIP and SMP network through public engagement.
  • Ensure program goals are met by providing office support, including answering hotline calls and assisting walk-in traffic.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Post high school coursework/training in social work, human services, public administration, human development, social sciences, psychology, public relations, or a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to speak publicly and engage with diverse audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to research and understand complicated information.
  • Comfortable using a computer and navigating online tools and processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Medicare, Medicaid, or other health insurance.
  • Experience in volunteer or team coordination.
  • Experience in training, teaching, or coaching complex topics.
