About the position

The Compensation Analyst I plays a crucial role in the administration of staff compensation and classification programs at the University of Alabama. This position ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws while analyzing and evaluating positions for appropriate titles, pay ranges, and organizational hierarchy. The analyst provides guidance to HR Business Partners and maintains knowledge of compensation laws and trends.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the administration of staff compensation and classification programs and projects.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws regarding compensation.
  • Analyze and evaluate positions for appropriate titles, pay ranges, and organizational hierarchy.
  • Research and analyze staff position descriptions for classification and compensation.
  • Evaluate FLSA status and AAP coding for positions.
  • Benchmark University staff positions against market standards.
  • Compile salary information for salary surveys and consult with departments on classification and compensation practices.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all federal, state, and local laws governing compensation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and some compensation or human resources experience; OR associate's degree and two (2) years of compensation or human resources experience.
  • Ability to build, maintain, and work effectively with colleagues, faculty, and staff.
  • Effective organizational, analytical, multi-tasking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented with a commitment to quality and accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with department representatives and employees at all levels.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing compensation.
  • Knowledge of current job markets and trends.
  • Knowledge of compensation principles and practices.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters and situations.
  • Proficiency in Excel.
  • Ability to quickly learn new systems and applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or Organizational Development.
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP).
  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP certification.
  • Experience reviewing position descriptions for classification and FLSA status.
  • Experience in higher education.
