About the position

The Non-Profit Compensation/Benefits Consultant is responsible for providing expert advice and guidance on compensation strategies, benefit programs, and overall HR compliance within a non-profit organization. This role ensures that compensation and benefits packages are equitable, competitive, and aligned with the organization's mission and financial capacity. The consultant collaborates with HR, leadership teams, and other stakeholders to assess, design, and implement solutions that attract, retain, and motivate staff while ensuring sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct job evaluations and salary surveys to assess current compensation structures.
  • Develop salary structures, pay scales, and compensation guidelines tailored to non-profit organizations.
  • Analyze compensation trends within the non-profit sector and provide recommendations to ensure competitiveness.
  • Evaluate internal equity and ensure alignment with industry benchmarks for similar positions.
  • Support leadership in setting salary ranges, bonuses, and incentive programs that are budget-conscious and aligned with mission goals.
  • Assess existing benefit programs and recommend improvements to enhance employee satisfaction and retention.
  • Design and manage employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, wellness initiatives, and other employee perks.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analysis for various benefits options and ensure alignment with the organization's budget and strategic goals.
  • Provide guidance on legal compliance regarding benefits offerings, including ACA, FMLA, COBRA, and ERISA requirements.
  • Educate staff on available benefits, enrollment processes, and health and wellness initiatives.
  • Develop communication materials to ensure that employees fully understand their compensation and benefits packages.
  • Conduct workshops or information sessions to engage employees and ensure transparency in the organization's compensation philosophy.
  • Provide ongoing support for employees with questions about their benefits and compensation.
  • Ensure that compensation and benefits programs comply with federal, state, and local labor laws, including wage and hour regulations, tax laws, and non-profit-specific regulations.
  • Prepare and maintain reports for internal leadership and regulatory bodies as required, including audits and compliance checks.
  • Monitor industry and legislative trends to ensure compliance with emerging regulations related to compensation and benefits.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership and HR teams on compensation-related matters.
  • Assist in aligning compensation strategies with the organization's mission, values, and budget constraints.
  • Work with leadership to ensure compensation and benefits policies support the recruitment, retention, and motivation of a diverse workforce.
  • Lead or contribute to special projects related to compensation and benefits, including system implementations or redesigning benefits offerings.
  • Work cross-functionally with finance, HR, and other departments to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Assist with budget planning to ensure that compensation and benefits programs are financially sustainable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • A Master's degree or certification in Compensation (e.g., Certified Compensation Professional - CCP) is a plus.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in compensation and benefits, preferably within the non-profit sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of compensation strategies, benefits programs, and legal compliance, with experience in a non-profit setting being highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with HRIS, compensation management tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, with a focus on collaboration and strategic thinking.
  • Knowledge of non-profit regulations, tax-exempt status considerations, and funding constraints.
