About the position

The Compensation/Payroll Manager is a key member of the HR Shared Services team at W. R. Berkley Corporation, responsible for overseeing the payroll department and ensuring that the company's pay and incentive programs are administered consistently and in compliance with internal policies and government regulations. This role involves implementing new and revised compensation programs, policies, and procedures that align with the company's strategic goals and competitive practices. The manager will be tasked with the development, implementation, and administration of merit increases, bonus payments, executive compensation, and various incentive programs. In addition to managing the payroll team, the Compensation/Payroll Manager is responsible for hiring and developing employees within the department, as well as conducting performance management for the team. The role requires designing innovative solutions for specific compensation-related programs, including incentive plans, salary structures, and job architecture. Collaboration with the HRIS analyst team and HR partners is essential for program and process changes, as well as system efficiencies and enhancements. The manager will also oversee the overall Workday Payroll process established for both the US and UK operations, providing guidance to HR partners regarding compensation programs and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local compensation laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the payroll department and ensure compliance with internal policies and government regulations.
  • Implement new and revised compensation programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Administer merit increases, bonus payments, executive compensation, and incentive programs.
  • Hire and develop employees within the payroll team and manage their performance.
  • Design innovative solutions for compensation-related programs and salary structures.
  • Collaborate with HRIS analyst team and HR partners on program and process changes.
  • Oversee the Workday Payroll process for the US and UK.
  • Provide advice to HR partners regarding compensation programs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in employee compensation/multi-state payroll.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to employee compensation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and present data.
  • Proficiency in advanced Excel skills and HRIS experience (Workday preferred).
  • Experience in leading projects and systems integrations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with at least two years of experience managing a team.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to set priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with senior management and stakeholders.
  • Experience working with global compensation/payroll and global teams preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified compensation credential desired; SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) a plus.
