About the position

The Complex Coder position at Banner Health involves coding and abstracting for a full range of outpatient complex surgical and observation acute care services across all Banner hospitals. The role requires a motivated and experienced coder to ensure accurate coding in accordance with regulatory requirements and nationally recognized coding guidelines. This is a fully remote position with flexible hours, emphasizing productivity and quality standards in coding.

Responsibilities

• Analyze medical information from medical records and accurately code diagnostic and procedural information according to national coding guidelines.
• Consult with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
• Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes, and other pertinent information from patient encounters.
• Ensure compliance with coding rules and regulations according to regulatory agencies and Banner-specific policies.
• May provide mentoring for less experienced staff members and act as a subject matter expert for complex coding.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge and specialized formal training in medical record keeping principles and practices.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA) certification in active status.
• Two or more years of outpatient complex experience in an acute care inpatient facility or healthcare system.
• Knowledge and understanding of ICD CM/PCS, CPT4 coding principles and coding competencies.

Nice-to-haves

• Associates degree in a job-related field or equivalent experience.
