About the position

The Complex Coder position at Banner Health involves coding and abstracting for a full range of outpatient complex surgical and observation acute care services across all Banner hospitals. The role requires a motivated and experienced coder with certifications such as CPS, CCS, RHIT, or RHIA, and entails working remotely while maintaining high accuracy and productivity standards. The coder will analyze medical records, assign appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes, and ensure compliance with coding regulations and guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Analyze medical information from medical records and accurately code diagnostic and procedural information according to national coding guidelines.
• Consult with medical providers to clarify missing or inadequate record information and determine appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
• Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes, and other pertinent information from patient encounters.
• Ensure compliance with coding rules and regulations according to regulatory agencies and Banner-specific policies.
• May provide mentoring for less experienced staff members and act as a subject matter expert for complex coding.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, or an Associate's degree in a health care field.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA) certification in active status.
• Two or more years of outpatient complex coding experience in an acute care inpatient facility or healthcare system.
• Knowledge of ICD CM/PCS and CPT4 coding principles.

Nice-to-haves

• Associate's degree in a job-related field or equivalent experience.
• Previous experience in a large, multi-system healthcare organization.
