About the position

The Compliance Investigator position is located within the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety Field Operations at the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). This role is designed for entry-level investigators seeking to develop their skills in compliance and enforcement related to hazardous materials regulations. The position involves receiving training and guidance from senior investigators while participating in field investigations and safety assessments to ensure compliance with hazardous materials regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and properly dispose of reports involving noncompliance with Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct field surveillance and investigations of various entities involved in hazardous materials transportation.
  • Participate in DOT hazardous materials enforcement meetings and joint inspections with other agencies.
  • Assist in administering less complex assignments and discharge investigative responsibilities under guidance.
  • Collect, safeguard, and evaluate evidence related to violations and participate in informal conferences with alleged violators.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible for consideration.
  • Experience assisting in analyzing information to identify safety concerns through research and data collection.
  • Experience interpreting and applying technical requirements to compliance problems in field inspections.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in hazardous materials transportation safety.
  • Knowledge of compliance and enforcement concepts related to hazardous materials.
