About the position

The Compressor Development Engineer II at Daikin Applied will play a crucial role in the design and development of centrifugal compressors for commercial HVAC products. This position involves collaboration with lab personnel on prototype concepts, ensuring that products meet lifecycle requirements through detailed mechanical analysis and testing. The engineer will be involved in all stages of product development, from initial design to final implementation, contributing to the enhancement of Daikin's brand through innovative engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Create and implement planning for compressor development including Design and Review milestones.
  • Conduct detailed and advanced centrifugal compressor design, covering mechanical and electrical components.
  • Evaluate mechanical aspects to ensure product meets lifecycle requirements, including stress, vibration, modal, and fatigue analysis.
  • Participate in the entire product development process from customer requirements to product launch.
  • Derive component-level requirements from assembly requirements to create part specifications and drawings.
  • Communicate with suppliers and vendors to determine manufacturability of designs.
  • Participate in inspection results to ensure parts are manufactured as specified.
  • Instruct designers to create specifications and check part drawings.
  • Apply manufacturing and inspection capabilities to choose materials and tolerances.
  • Create robust designs using DFMEA methods during design, analysis, and testing.
  • Develop pass/fail criteria for analysis and test results based on fundamental mechanics.
  • Use simulation tools to simulate design performance and reliability to support DFMEA.
  • Plan and develop test programs for prototypes using Design of Experiments for complex problems.
  • Instruct lab technicians to set up tests and gather data to meet test parameters.
  • Analyze test data and reports to determine if designs meet specifications.
  • Develop parts qualification processes and make pass/fail decisions based on criteria.
  • Provide detailed analysis based on mathematical, finite element analysis, and experimental data.
  • Provide accurate product performance results for marketing and sales.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure final product meets objectives and customer requirements.
  • Document all projects and tasks throughout the development process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of related experience (higher level degree can substitute for years of experience).
  • Experience with turbomachinery, preferably centrifugal compressors.
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing capabilities and materials.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles focusing on stress analysis, mechanics of materials, vibration, fatigue, and failure modes.
  • Experience in centrifugal compressor component design including gears, bearings, and rotating equipment.
  • Experience in product testing and data acquisition, particularly for compressor performance validation.
  • Basic skills with CAD applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with global HVAC principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of mechanical component design standards (ASHRAE, GB, ISO, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of test data analysis software and tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Proficient in writing reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information to groups.
