About the position

The Comptroller - Data Policy Analyst position involves conducting policy and statistical analysis to support the Comptroller's fiduciary responsibilities and facilitate informed decision-making by state lawmakers and agencies. The role includes producing articles and reports on economic topics, updating databases, and conducting research to inform the public and agency leadership. This position is part of a collaborative team dedicated to accurate data analysis and public service.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, conduct, and administer data analysis and research projects.
  • Develop plans, policies, and procedures for data analysis focusing on local, regional, and state economies.
  • Design studies and methodologies for data analysis.
  • Oversee methods of analysis and presentation of results for reports.
  • Review and organize data collection and apply statistical methods.
  • Write reports or articles on data analysis and research projects.
  • Lead small teams on data analysis projects as needed.
  • Prepare estimated project completion timelines and maintain records of work accomplished.
  • Translate complex data into relevant content for publications.
  • Monitor trends in data tools, concepts, and technologies.
  • Analyze economic trends affecting Texans and explain them for agency publications.
  • Prepare and present reports for publication.
  • Review data, legislation, regulations, and policies to determine impact.
  • Evaluate findings relative to specific projects.
  • Monitor consultant contracts and provide input for correspondence and reports.
  • Deliver presentations to outside groups and individuals.
  • Testify at hearings and legislative meetings as required.
  • Draft and review legislation and fiscal notes as requested.
  • Monitor legislative hearings of interest and prepare work status briefings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • One year of full-time experience in qualitative and quantitative research, data analysis, or policy development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in business administration, public administration, government, political science, economics, statistics, finance, research methodology, social science, journalism, or related field.
  • Experience with Texas financial and/or policy issues.
  • Experience working in a Texas state agency or legislature.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and writing reports related to data analysis and policy development.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting state or local economies.
  • Experience conducting complex data analysis using software such as Excel, Stata, SAS, or SPSS.
  • Experience coordinating projects and managing multiple team members.
