About the position

The Computer Associate I-III/Computer Specialist I-IV (Software) position at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority involves the upgrade, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of software and embedded firmware for various electronic systems used in public transportation. The role requires collaboration with multiple departments and provides technical support and training to operations staff. This position is part-time and operates in a 24/7 environment, with various work hours across multiple locations in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Upgrade, maintain, test, and troubleshoot software and embedded firmware for Public Address systems, digital sound processors, and customer information screens.
  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures for maintenance of hardware and software assets.
  • Install and upgrade software and hardware as needed.
  • Resolve problems and perform diagnostics on software issues.
  • Maintain and update documentation related to software and hardware.
  • Conduct testing and analysis of systems and software.
  • Liaise with in-house maintenance groups and user departments to ensure effective communication and support.
  • Provide technical support, training, and knowledge transfer to operations staff.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in computer science or a related field with 24 semester credits in computer science and one year of relevant experience.
  • A four-year high school diploma or equivalent and five years of relevant experience.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with specific substitutions allowed for college education.

Nice-to-haves

  • Network design and/or implementation experience.
  • Experience with VMWARE and PC hardware.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office, Visio, Oracle, Windows, UNIX (including LINUX, QNX).
  • Excellent oral, written, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
