About the position

The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) is seeking applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor position in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, focusing on Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) with an emphasis on Natural Language Processing (NLP). The successful candidate will engage in research, teaching, and service, contributing to the M.S. program in NLP and collaborating with industry researchers in Silicon Valley. The position is based at the Silicon Valley campus and requires travel between campuses.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the M.S. program in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at the Silicon Valley campus.
• Develop a research program in Generative Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing.
• Advise graduate students in their research areas.
• Obtain external funding for research initiatives.
• Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
• Perform university, public, and professional service activities.
• Interact with researchers in Silicon Valley's industrial research and development labs.
• Travel between the Silicon Valley campus and the main UCSC campus.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in computer science or a relevant field (expected by June 30, 2025).
• Demonstrated record of research in Generative Artificial Intelligence or related areas.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in language modeling and model explainability.
• Research contributions in multimodal understanding and synthesis.
• Experience with GenAI for social good and human-robot interaction.
