About the position
The Computer Scientist position at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) involves collaborating with a team of research software engineers to provide front-end development support for various research projects within the Engineering Laboratory. The role focuses on building and maintaining software tools that facilitate scientific research, requiring a strong foundation in software engineering and programming languages.
Responsibilities
- Develop software tools using team-standard languages and frameworks, including Python, Java, MATLAB, R, and HTML/CSS.
- Collaborate with project managers to manage tasks and contribute technical insights.
- Write user-focused documentation and implement testing processes for software tools.
- Engage with stakeholders to gather and define technical requirements.
- Work with APIs and SQL databases to support data-driven applications.
- Collaborate closely with other team members to ensure seamless software development and integration.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- A Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or a combination of education and experience in mathematics, statistics, and computer science.
- At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 level in software engineering, or a Master's degree, or a combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in teaching or mentoring others in software development.
- Familiarity with additional programming languages or frameworks beyond those listed.
