About the position

The Computer Systems Senior Engineer at Virginia Tech's Department of Physics is responsible for designing, managing, and maintaining the department's hardware and software support infrastructure, with a focus on Linux-based systems and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters. This role is crucial for supporting the research and teaching mission of the department, ensuring that all computing and electronic communication needs are met effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Design, manage, and maintain the department's hardware and software support infrastructure.
  • Focus on Linux-based systems and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.
  • Work collaboratively with the Physics Department IT team to meet computing and communication needs.
  • Monitor systems after hours and respond to major incidents, including physical hardware issues.
  • Administer and support Linux operating systems, including installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • Build, manage, and maintain high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.
  • Analyze computer needs and suggest requirements for future computing needs.
  • Advise faculty and students on optimal HPC resource utilization.

Requirements

  • Advanced computer knowledge for various platforms, particularly Linux and HPC systems.
  • Ability to understand and configure computer software, hardware, networks, and operating systems.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess computer needs and future requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills to work with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Willingness to share on-call responsibilities and respond to incidents after hours.
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux operating systems administration and support.
  • Experience in building and maintaining HPC clusters.
  • Knowledge of IT security issues and compliance with university requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Windows and Mac systems.
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning tools.
  • Ability to advise on HPC needs between department resources and Virginia Tech's Advanced Research Computing.
  • Experience with GPU computing.
