About the position

The Computer Systems Senior Engineer will be responsible for designing, managing, and maintaining the hardware and software support infrastructure for the Department of Physics. This role focuses on Linux-based systems and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, ensuring that the department's research and teaching missions are supported effectively. The engineer will collaborate with the IT team to meet all computing and electronic communication needs within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Design, manage, and maintain the department's hardware and software support infrastructure.
  • Focus on Linux-based systems and high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.
  • Work with the IT team to ensure all computing and electronic communication needs are met.
  • Monitor systems after hours and respond to major incidents, including physical hardware issues.
  • Analyze computer needs and suggest requirements for future computing needs.

Requirements

  • Advanced computer knowledge for various platforms, particularly Linux and HPC systems.
  • Ability to understand and configure computer software, hardware, networks, and operating systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with administration and support of Linux operating systems.
  • Experience with building, managing, and maintaining HPC clusters.
  • Knowledge of IT security issues and ability to respond to university requirements and best practices.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Windows and Mac systems.
  • Willingness to learn about AI and machine learning tools.
  • Ability to advise on optimal HPC resource usage between department and university resources.
  • Experience with GPU computing.
