About the position

Epic Games is seeking technical designers for its Fortnite team and other related projects. In this role, you will play a central part in an interdisciplinary team focused on enhancing the functionality and quality of Fortnite. Your expertise in game design and exemplary technical skills will help identify cost-effective technical solutions to designers' problems and contribute to their implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Create design content that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in Fortnite.
  • Improve and adapt existing Blueprints to meet the latest standards.
  • Work on complex live events, leveraging both technical and creative expertise to ensure optimal performance.
  • Identify observed gaps, correct them yourself or delegate necessary tasks to appropriate programming teams.
  • Set up reusable, generalizable, and robust Blueprint code elements for your design group to use.
  • Evaluate technical debt in the systems you work on and take responsibility for reducing or managing it.
  • Thoroughly understand the current and long-term design goals of your design group and ensure these goals are represented in development discussions.
  • Make essential UX decisions regarding the operation of tools and workflows.
  • Act as a liaison with teams responsible for performance and artistic elements to ensure your design group meets technical requirements.

Requirements

  • Blueprint specialist: Introduction, improvement, and streamlining of new and existing mechanisms, systems, and content.
  • Technical problem-solving: Exceptional debugging skills, ability to thrive in a dynamic crisis-prone environment, perfect attention to detail at the last moments of release cycles, expertise in version management.
  • Game systems technical design: Data resource architecture, spreadsheet automation, solid software architecture in Blueprint, efficiency and robustness of algorithms, impeccable ability to facilitate communication between programmers and designers.
  • Workflow design: Knowledge of the process of creating elements from design to publication. Experience in various areas of game design, user experience research, analytics, tool metrics, user studies, and software product experience.
  • Game tool design: 2D, UX design, wireframes, mockups, Unreal Motion Graphics or utility editor widgets, workflow design.
  • Memory profiling and reporting: Understanding of systems related to artistic elements, experience with cross-platform publishing, prioritization of technical debt.
  • Technical element guidance: Passionate about code or Blueprint element review, excellent teaching skills, ability to lead lunch-and-learn sessions and talks, documentation specialist, and demonstrable technical excellence in design tasks.
  • Effective generalist designer: Experience in independent game development or solo projects, quick learning mindset, skills in 3D art, animation, AI, and user interfaces.
