About the position

The position involves performing skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility. The worker may provide lead or expert supervision over other workers. Essential functions include a variety of construction tasks such as electrical wiring, concrete finishing, plumbing, and carpentry. The role also requires maintaining safety standards, preparing reports, and interacting with the public regarding work activities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work, such as electrical wiring, finishing concrete, plumbing, or carpentry.
  • Provide lead expertise for a small work crew.
  • Explain and enforce rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, hazardous material, direction of traffic, and operation of equipment.
  • Maintain daily work records and prepare safety reports; may perform computerized data entry work.
  • Notify the public of work activities and answer questions.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on the equipment.
  • Construct new streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and handicap ramps.
  • Maintain, clean, and repair and build streets, storm drains, parking lots, curbs, gutters, box culverts, bridges, sidewalks, and handicap ramps.
  • Set forms and perform concrete work for chain link fences, block walls, meter and traffic bases, stems, and footings.
  • Mix concrete; pour concrete into some type of formwork.
  • Spread, level, and compact concrete.
  • Mix, spread, compact, finish, and cure concrete for buildings, bridges, tunnels, and roads using hand tools, troweling machinery, and other power tools.
  • Lay brick, block, rock, and perform masonry work.
  • Mix chemicals to make brine.
  • Remove surface imperfections before the concrete has fully hardened.
  • Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones.
  • Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials.
  • Load, unload, or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations according to project plans or specifications.
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed.
  • Erect or dismantle scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, or other temporary structures.
  • Display courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and make every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance.
  • Refrain from the use of abusive, indecent, or profane language or gestures in the workplace.
  • Perform duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group.
  • Refrain from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control.
  • Display responsibility for attendance and promptness and report to the work area on time.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards, and precautions common to the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Must possess computer application skills that include Microsoft Office Suite products including Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of work zone safety, traffic control, and flagging.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and maps.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public and answer citizen questions.
  • Ability to determine what equipment, tools, manpower, and materials will be needed to complete assigned projects.
  • Ability to operate various light, medium, heavy, and specialized equipment.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Ability to perform maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements.
