About the position
The Conductor Trainee position at BNSF Railway is a full-time role focused on ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight. Trainees will undergo extensive training, including on-the-job and classroom instruction, to learn about train operations, safety protocols, and compliance measures. This role is critical in supporting the rail network's efficiency and sustainability, with responsibilities that include communication, switching functions, and inspections in a safety-sensitive environment.
Responsibilities
- Obtain, receive, and act on information through various devices.
- Climb on/off equipment and manage hand brakes.
- Connect/disconnect air hoses and replace broken railcar knuckles.
- Interpret signals for train movement and judge/control speed and clearance distances.
- Operate track switches and derails to change train routing.
- Inspect cars per federal regulations and monitor track conditions.
- Report on passing train conditions and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
Requirements
- Must be able to work in the US without company sponsorship now and in the future.
- At least 18 years of age by the start date.
- Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
- Ability to work safely in diverse and extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to work on-call, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to meet travel requirements and stay in designated seniority region for extended periods.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
- Ability to visually distinguish colors and see at night.
- Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds.
