About the position

The Conductor Trainee position at BNSF Railway is a full-time role within the Transportation Department, focusing on ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight. Trainees will undergo extensive on-the-job and classroom training, learning to manage train operations, comply with safety protocols, and contribute to the overall efficiency of the rail network. This role requires flexibility in working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and involves frequent travel within the designated seniority region.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain, receive, and act on information through various devices, monitoring and reporting daily work.
  • Climb on/off equipment, manage hand brakes, connect/disconnect air hoses, and replace broken railcar knuckles.
  • Interpret signals for train movement and judge/control speed and clearance distances.
  • Operate track switches and derails to change train routing and check switch points for proper alignment.
  • Switch and spot cars, determine train make-up, and inspect cars per federal regulations.
  • Monitor track conditions and report on passing train conditions.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work in the US without company sponsorship now and in the future.
  • At least 18 years of age by the start date.
  • Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
  • Ability to work safely in diverse and extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work on-call, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements and stay in the designated seniority region for extended periods.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to visually distinguish colors and see at night.
  • Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds.
