About the position

American YouthWorks is seeking Conservation and Disaster Crew Leaders to join our Texas Conservation Corps (TXCC) team in Austin, Texas. This position is designed for individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in disaster mitigation, habitat restoration, trail projects, and disaster relief. As a Crew Leader, you will guide and mentor a team of young adults as they engage in various conservation projects across public lands, coastal regions, National Parks, and recreational areas throughout the Central Southern United States. This role not only focuses on environmental stewardship but also emphasizes the development of leadership skills and a strong work ethic among participants. The Conservation and Disaster Crews are dedicated to completing habitat restoration and trail projects in collaboration with partners such as the National Park Service and Travis County Parks. While the primary focus will be on conservation efforts, these crews are also on-call to respond to disasters, including floods, fires, and hurricanes. Crew Leaders will receive specialized training in spontaneous volunteer management, donations management, and the Incident Command System, preparing them to effectively lead their teams during emergencies. Participants can expect to work outdoors in various weather conditions and may travel between 25-75% of the time, depending on project needs and deployment schedules. This is a temporary, term-based AmeriCorps position that runs from January 9 to December 1, 2023, requiring a commitment of 1700 hours. Successful participants may have the opportunity to extend their service for another season, subject to AmeriCorps term limitations.
