About the position

As a Construction Financial Analyst/Underwriter at Travelers Insurance, you will play a crucial role in the Bond & Specialty Insurance division, which provides management and professional liability insurance, as well as surety bonds to businesses and non-profit organizations of all sizes. This position is integral to the Construction Services team, which focuses on providing surety bonds to both public and private owners of construction projects. Your responsibilities will include evaluating and analyzing financial and business risks, building relationships with clients, agents, and brokers, and negotiating insurance solutions that meet the needs of our customers. In this dynamic role, you will manage the profitability, growth, and retention of a smaller assigned book of business. You will underwrite and negotiate routine customer accounts, ensuring that risks are minimized while maximizing profitability. Collaboration with leadership is essential as you execute business unit underwriting strategies to achieve profit and growth objectives. You will also cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners and external agents and brokers, regularly meeting with them to market and sell Travelers products. Your ability to assess risk and effectively communicate will be key to driving results and contributing to the overall success of Travelers. The ideal candidate will possess applicable professional experience, a bachelor's degree, and one to three years of underwriting experience. You should have a working knowledge of products, the regulatory environment, and local market conditions. Critical thinking skills are essential for underwriting and marketing products, identifying financial challenges, and making informed decisions aligned with our risk appetite. Strong communication skills will enable you to negotiate effectively with agents and brokers, ensuring that you can represent Travelers in the best possible light.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of a typically smaller assigned book of business.
  • Underwrite and negotiate routine customer accounts to minimize risk and maximize profitability.
  • Partner with leadership to execute business unit underwriting strategies across your book of business to achieve profit and growth objectives.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners within the business unit and across the enterprise to identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with external partners by regularly meeting in person with agents and brokers to market and sell Travelers products.
  • Identify and capture new business opportunities using consultative marketing and sales skills.
  • Execute agency, region, and group sales plans with guidance from management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Applicable professional experience.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One to three years of applicable underwriting experience.
  • Working knowledge of products, the regulatory environment, and local market conditions.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to underwrite, market products, identify financial challenges, and analyze available information to make decisions in alignment with our risk appetite.
  • Communication skills with the ability to negotiate with agents and brokers.
