About the position

Urban Engineers is seeking qualified individuals in Northern New Jersey to join the Transit Construction Management Department as a Construction Inspector. This position will be performing on-site construction inspection services for a railroad/transit tunnel rehabilitation project in North New Jersey. The Construction Inspector will play a crucial role in ensuring that all construction activities are conducted in accordance with the contract documents and approved shop drawings. This includes daily observation of geotechnical, structural, and site civil construction activities, as well as maintaining comprehensive records of the work performed. The inspector will be responsible for problem detection, issue resolution, and quality control services throughout the project lifecycle. In this role, the Construction Inspector will prepare inspector daily reports (IDR) and perform the necessary quality control measures required for construction inspection in a field office, acting as a representative for the railroad. The inspector will also take quantity measurements and computations for pay reports, track material deliveries, handling, and storage, and review materials for compliance with contract documents and quality standards. Updating record drawings throughout the life of the project is also a key responsibility. The inspector will observe work operations to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations and will proactively communicate with both the contractor and the client to ensure the project progresses in a timely manner to meet established goals. Additionally, the Construction Inspector will monitor contractor performance to ensure a quality product is delivered, maintain continual communication with the contractor's field personnel, and liaise with the Resident Engineer or client to keep them updated on field activities. The inspector will also be required to maintain certifications necessary for industry expertise and perform other duties as assigned by management.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the contractor's work activities for conformance with contract documents including approved shop drawings.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of four years of experience in construction supervision/inspection.
  • Transit, rail, and/or infrastructure construction experience.
  • NJ Transit, Amtrak, SEPTA, and other agency safety training as needed.
  • Comprehensive understanding of safety practices on an operating railroad.
  • Have proper certifications or is immediately capable of acquiring the necessary safety certifications, including but not limited to OSHA 10 hour and NJ OSHA 10 hr. Training.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related field is desired.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
