About the position

As a Construction-Line Worker at Windstream, you will be responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining poles, cables, and conduits. This role involves working with both aerial and buried cables, ensuring safety procedures are followed, and operating heavy machinery. You will also be required to maintain inventory and perform routine maintenance, while working in various weather conditions and potentially on weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain poles, cables, and conduits.
  • Use electronic test equipment to measure signal strength.
  • Interpret staking sheets and blueprints.
  • Install aerial cables (fiber and copper) and inspect these lines.
  • Analyze and record test results to locate faults.
  • Set up service for customers by installing and connecting equipment.
  • Access specific areas to string lines or install terminal boxes using bucket trucks or climbing poles.
  • String cables between structures and pull lines to proper tension using jacks and hoists.
  • Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string it through conduits.
  • Pull cable through ducts by hand or with winches.
  • Dig trenches for underground wires or cables.
  • Perform work in accordance with industry standards and RUS standards.
  • Read and follow design engineers' instructions and specifications.
  • Prepare engineering field notes and interpret telecom facilities in records and maps.
  • Participate in engineering, permit, and construction processes as required.
  • Recognize and repair route issues including hand hole cleanup and sign placement.
  • Fill and tamp holes using cement, earth, and tamping devices.

Requirements

  • Ability to use a variety of construction equipment such as digger derricks and bucket trucks.
  • Outside plant construction experience including installation, repair, and maintenance of poles and cables.
  • Pole climbing certification.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions year-round.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass DOT certification pre-hire.
  • Minimum qualifications to obtain a CDL post-hire.
  • Exceptional time-management and attention to detail.
  • OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course and Buck Squeeze certifications.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year of outside plant construction experience or related Trade School certification.
