About the position

The Construction Materials Internship at ECS Mid-Atlantic, LLC is designed for students actively pursuing a Bachelor or Master degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the construction process by observing and documenting field activities. Interns will engage in sampling, testing, and inspecting various construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement. The role involves performing calculations and data reduction of test results, as well as drafting reports based on findings. Interns will utilize field screening equipment to document readings and will be required to read maps, follow directions, and interpret engineering and construction plans. Daily interaction and communication with contractors, technicians, and project managers will be a key part of the role, allowing interns to gain confidence and experience as they represent ECS on project sites. This position is ideal for those interested in understanding how building materials are utilized in the construction process and who are eager to learn in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Observing and documenting field activities related to the construction process
  • Sampling, testing, and inspecting soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement
  • Performing calculations and data reduction of test results along with drafting
  • Using field screening equipment and documenting readings
  • Reading maps, following directions, and interpreting engineering and construction plans
  • Interacting and communicating daily with contractors, technicians, and project managers
  • Gaining the confidence to be the sole representative of ECS on project sites

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor or Master degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related degree
  • Interest in how building materials are utilized in the construction process
  • Ability to carry 40 - 70 lbs multiple times a day or occasionally lift 85 lbs to waist height
  • Must be able to provide suitable transportation for use on job sites
