About the position

The Data Center Construction Manager at AWS is responsible for overseeing the construction of data centers, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This role involves direct interaction with construction contractors, managing project scope, quality, schedule, and budget, while also collaborating with various teams to deliver innovative and energy-efficient data center designs. The position requires a strong focus on project management and construction oversight, with a commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Manage construction project oversight for new builds and capital projects.
  • Interface directly with construction general contractors during all project phases.
  • Negotiate with general contractors and evaluate bids with accuracy.
  • Create project scope and request for proposals.
  • Conduct financial analysis of construction projects.
  • Manage construction projects aimed at increasing data center resiliency.
  • Perform constructability reviews of electrical and mechanical designs.
  • Oversee construction document management including submittals, RFIs, change orders, and invoicing.
  • Ensure construction project quality control.
  • Record and report key construction metrics to team members and management.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause failure analysis for equipment failures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent experience; or 6+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 6+ years of experience in construction management of large, complex projects involving mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
  • 6+ years of experience in general contractor and vendor management, including proposals, bidding, change orders, and quality control.
  • 6+ years of experience in constructing electrical engineering systems and mechanical engineering systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of electrical engineering principles including switch gear, UPS, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Experience in the design or construction of data centers or large-scale mechanical and electrical plants.
  • Ability to define data center system-level architecture and create project documentation.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, BOCA, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Experience in controls and commissioning of large-scale projects.
